SB> Hello to the Group!
Hi, Stan;
SB> Here's the question of the week....Other than the fact that a j-pole
SB> looks so neat on your tower, What is the real benefit of it?
SB> I have always been told that odd multiples of a 1/4 wave required no
SB> special matching sections when built over a 1/4 wave radial.
SB> To prove this to myself, I built a 3/4 wavelength over 1/4 wave
SB> radials (drooped 45 degrees) and it matched VERY good!
I would expect it to be a good match.
SB> Will the same apply to a 5/4 wavelength version?
I would guess that you would get a good match.
SB> If so, how much gain can I expect?
I doubt your gain would be more than 3 dB or so, because you have fields
canceling each other. You would be better off with a co-linear 5/8 wave
with a 1/2 wave matching stub, (J) and a 1/4 wave phasing stub between
the elements. This will give you a good 6 dB gain compared to a 1/2 wave
dipole.
SB> Thanks for all responses!
My pleasure.
SB> No, I can't afford an ARRL antenna handbook! hi hi hi! :-)
Neither can I, but it's a great resource!
