Your wife is not the only one. My wife suggested that we consider moving
to a warm climate which is a bit premature given that I have over two years
to go before retirement. But she has a point: here we are in May and we
still have show in the back yard and the %^$#& voles have done a
wonderful job on our lawn.
And given that we can expect snow in September, we only have 3 months of summer.

In the last while I've seen a lot of references to Northern Exposure, my
favorite TV show about Alaska so maybe we all feel we're losing something.
But it is tough to live up here although our goods and services are getting
cheaper. We now have several box stores up here and have become the place
to shop for everyone from Lower Post to Tok and much of the SouthEast.
