G'day Bill,

On 22-02-95 09:13, Bill Grimsley said to Jeff Green

BG> Sure, I understand what you mean, but don't forget that quite a

BG> few 'ROMs are specifically set up to run under Windows only (most

BG> of the encyclopaedias and other reference works, for example),

BG> therefore you'll probably need to maintain some minimal form of

 BG> Windows support.

Yeah :-(

BG> I'm not convinced that SCSI devices are really necessary these

BG> days, as EIDE drives are just as quick, and a lot cheaper. You

BG> could always piss the controller off, buy a 4-port VLB EIDE

BG> controller (as I just did), and run up to 4 (E)IDE drives from

 BG> the one internal slot.

I don't have VLB.

BG>> Cirrus Logic 5428. When I installed Warp though, it auto-detected

JG>> It's the drivers for that one that are supposed to be of the buggy

JG>> lot. It's been recommended that people use the 5426 or 5424 (??)

JG>> drivers instead if you are experiencing any problems.

BG> Really? I thought the ET-4000 W32i drivers were the buggy ones.

BG> I've certainly seen nothing to suggest that the Cirrus drivers

BG> are causing problems, and I'm running the 5428 chipset drivers

BG> too. So far, they've been nothing less than superb.

Yeah, the ET4000/W?? series are buggy as well.

From what I've read about the problems, it seems that the Cirrus ones can
cause underlining of characters when using ZOC but the drivers are the ones
at fault.

The ET4000 drivers cause memory leakage and cause the swapfile to continue
to grow. These drivers can also cause the loss of data when downloading
files! Now that is weird but it's happened to enough people that it's known
to be the drivers.

BG>> At no time did I notice any problems with swapfile space not being

BG>> deallocated, although by the same token, I started with a 16Mb

BG>> swapper anyway, so who'd know?

[chomp]

See above as I don't think the Cirrus ones cause the memory leakage. I've
really only just started to take notice of that thread. You don't use a PM
app for comms do you?

BG>> Yep, and most of those apps were multiple copies of PMJpeg,

BG>> Galleria etc., with huge bitmaps loaded, as well as two separate

BG>> Windows sessions. I really wanted to punish the RAM, as you can

BG>> tell. Ergo, 12Mb should work brilliantly with Warp.

JG>> Very good! :-) <---big cheesy grin.

BG> Russell would suggest that you could get by quite happily with

BG> only 4Mb, but if you did, that cheesy grin would become a hateful

 BG> scowl.

I don't even recommend people run Windows in 4MB :-)

... Tell no big lies today. Small ones are just as effective.
