Hi Hubert,
Its a Spanning Tree Algorithm.
Its used within the bridge/whatever to detect on which port a particular 
address is, so it (the device) can decide whether or not to pass, block or 
modify, the "current" packet.
A repeater doesn't need it. A router and a bridge do, as do some other exotic 
"smart" devices on a network.
