Well usually I troll around the edges of weed beds or drop offs and hope for 
the best.  If I know of a good spot I'll anchor there and either jig or cast 
depending on what I am fishing for.  Personally I like to hang the rod on the 
side of the canoe and take a nice leisurely paddle along the shore of a 
mountain lake on a nice summer day.  It doesn't much matter then if I catch 
anything because I am enjoying nature the way it was intended to be enjoyed.  
Funny thing about this "method" is that I usually catch one of the best fish 
of the year when supposedly fishing is at its worst, which really annoys my 
buddies who are employing more scientific methods.  :)
