I don't know about an assembler but emx can be found at ftp.cdrom.com in
/pub/os2/unix/emx09a.

Yup, they have everything needed to turn source code into executables.

EMX executables (with some restrictions) will also run under DOS

Get the files install.doc and readme.doc from that directory and it will
tell you which files you need to get to install the compiler. To save
yourself some time in searching directories, ftp the file 00index.txt from
/pub/os2 which gives a list of all files, their directories and a short
description.

BD> BTW - are there OS/2 versions of GZip out there?

Yup. Get gz124_32.zip from the same site in /pub/os2/unix
