10 Jun 97 11:01, Hey Rocky! Elvis Hargrove pulled Viper vs. Vette outta his
hat!:
EH>
->> BTW, that little 232 CI hemi could just barely keep up with a 265
->> Chevy, but never pass
EH>
EH> Those were good little engines too! They re-wrote the displacement
EH> rules at our dirt track so those little Red Ram hemi's could run with
EH> the 235 stovebolt six's one year and they cleaned their clocks! Next
EH> year they made 'em run with the Chevys and Fords and they cleaned
EH> THEIR clocks.
The first time I saw an OHV engine in a dirt track stocker was a Packard V8
in a 47 Studebaker, c1958...cleaned house on the six's and flatheads
everybody else was running...so much so that they made up a new class, just
for the OHV powered cars...
The above caused the demise of the six's and flatheads and ruined my chances
of building one. I had a 38 Plymouth with a Chrysler Spitfire almost done
when the guy who was my partner, got put in jail for throwing the guy who was
doing his wife, out the 2nd story window when he caught them. Sold the
Plymouth to help him get out of jail..
EH> NExt year they outlawed 'em! Tough little engine though, and cam
EH> it so it could breath, and get OUT of the way!
Tell me about it. The only thing keeping that old Dodge from beating anybody
in a drag race was the fluid coupled transmission. When they went to the
push button torqueflyte, it was another story.
EH> They made 'em run two barrels with the six's but let 'em have WCFB's
EH> when they ran in the 292 class. Boy, that woke 'em up! The 292
EH> Fords were allowed roller tappets too! Chev's and Red Rams had to
EH> stay stock. Dirt tracks were sure fun in those days. Course the
EH> Sprints all ran flatheads until the 240 OHV 7 main Ford 6 came out.
EH> Now THERE were some screamers! THree dueces on a log, and 10" stub
EH> exhausts! Wake the DEAD!
We never had Sprints as a week in week out event. Mostly they just visited
on an irregular basis. When I left the midwest and that 1/2 mile dirt track
in 66, the day of the six's and flatheads was gone forever...
... All things being equal, fat people use more soap.
