DA> Nope, none. We bought them from a very reputable shop in the area
DA> here, so assuming we took their word that they were a proven pair,
DA> supposedly the first 2 clutches were duds.
Just a comment--PROVEN means that the pair has produced live chicks.
What you bought is a pair who laid eggs. This only means that at
least one of them is female (possibly both!). You really should invest
the $40 and have them DNA sexed to make sure you have a pair before you
go any farther. Odds are VERY good you don't. I once bought a "pair" of
cherryheaded conures, who had been sexed by feeling their vent bones.
One bird was big, one was small. Turned out to be a pair of males, both
of whom were VERY unhappy at being caged up with each other for 3 years!
DA> they have split rings, on opposite legs
This means that they were imported from the jungle, which means that
they are over 4 years old, as the last imports came into the US in 1993.
The band on one leg or the other means nothing--the quarantine personnel
banded on either leg indiscriminately (whatever was easier to reach in a
hurry). The USDA did NOT sex birds when they arrived at the quarantine
stations, so the band on the leg is entirely random.
