It has its own graphics library it tries to force you to use. The header files are grouped strangely. "Dgroup, Dgroup, Dgroup..." Sorry, this is turning into a top ten list... Let's just say that borland will compile most "generic" code (ansi, posix, most major standards...) But if you learn on borland, it encourages some bad habits you have to unlearn when moving to another compiler. On the other hand, it has an IDE, which emx doesn't.
