Subject: protection against hacking

I'm using PowerBasic 3.5 for DOS.

I don't know much about this kinda stuff...
How easy is it for someone to alter a program I've compiled? Like if
I've compiled a shareware prog, how easy is it for someone to get rid
of the unregistered quirks? I know this depends on how the
registration routines and quirks are built in, and what kind they
are... What are some good ways to hide them? It almost seems like the
sloppier the code is, the harder it would be to hack. Am I wrong?
All I know about hex editing is how to alter some of the text strings
in the prog, which is pretty easy. Is there some kind of irreversable
encryption program I can run on my EXEs to make them difficult to
hack?
