===========================================
TJM> I stand corrected. I thought he had the source for this
one as well.
Recap, & What I have:
- No Tea! Uh, amend that -- no Browser/ISP/Telnet!
That means Direct Dialup Only! Web URLs are useless,
without an intermediary or dialup mirror. If we find exactly
what I'm looking for, maybe Filegate would like to carry it?
- The archive (not "Source"), LORE_250.ZIP (tnx to Vicki
Fletcher of MyDeskBBS), which I've installed on my BBS.
- A desire to get the LORE Software Developers Kit, mentioned in
Lore's CONFIG.EXE:(H)elp. Perhaps I can use it to work
around the remaining bugs. I _Especially_ want to use it to rewrite the
DATA\LANGUAGE file to use Esperanto instead of English (and then run both
versions. Can I use the one engine and swap only the LANGUAGE files to
suit the current caller? Done it with other games, but very tricky if the
author doesn't directly support it). Other Doors that will help me create
Esperanto versions are also of interest.
Incidentally when a data file is flat ASCII, I can easily translate it as
is. Way too many of those things have encoding schemes unknown to me.
Of course if the owner would release the actual Source Code, I or someone
else might be able to fix the remaining bugs! I seldom program in Pascal,
but I'm flexible and it might be worth a shot. I can patch code a lot more
easily tban I can create nontrivial stuff from scratch. In the past I've
walked away from my own code for months, just so I can come back to it with
a fresh eye
-- seeing what I really put there, rather than what I merely
thought I put there.
Anyway I'm guessing at least some of those heap errors which dump the
caller out of Lore and sometimes others (FE comes to mind), happen because
MS-Windows gives only about ... 592k free RAM under 1meg available to a
single program, to an MS-W DOS Window, compared to the pure DOS machine
that most of the games from that era were written for, with maybe about
706k free under 1meg (your mileage will vary depending upon loaded drivers
and whatnot).
And some of the Lore spells don't work right.
jh> btw, the home of lore is http://elven.ca
Thanks! Maybe I can call in yet another favor to use a browser. Is there
anything I can do to get in and out *Very Fast*, and grab everything that
might possibly help? (Seriously, I've stretched time used there *very
thin*). Roughly, what's the total available file size on the site?
Thanks.
