JS> I've fired Winchester 180gr FMJ (USA brand) and 155gr Silvertips, Federal
JS> 155 and 180 gr hydrashoks, Speer 155gr GDHP, and various others through
JS> it with no problems. I'd pick a fairly energetic 150-155gr JHP for
JS> defense purposes and stick with it.
Noted
JS> When you do get around to loading for the .40, two very important items:
JS> Keep your OAL as close to maximum as possible on full power loads, and
JS> hit those rounds with a heavy taper crimp to finish: the .40S&W's case is
JS> very small compared to a .44 or .357, and even a very slightly deeper
JS> seated bullet can raise pressures dramatically. The taper crimp is to
JS> hold the bullet in place to prevent it from being driven in farther from
JS> recoil, taper being desired over roll crimping in a pistol to aid
JS> feeding.
JS> My favorite loads tend to be the 180gr XTP loaded hot with VV N350, and
JS> Nosler's 135gr JHP and the 155gr XTP loaded very hot with Blue Dot. Work
JS> these loads up carefully, and the USP will provide you with excellent
JS> performance coupled with quite comfortable recoil at these elevated
JS> energies.
Care to share your recipe. ie grains in the above loads . Not that
I won't work up to them. I am not stupid. As it turned out the most
accurate load I got on my .44 Wesson with the 300 gr. XTP was .1 grain
below max. And it is still pleasant to shoot. It seems that every gun has
its own idea of what it digests best.
Best regards.
