-> BA> I have an acquaintance that for years ran a BBS on a Heath
-> BA> H-8 (which is an 8080 chip with a whopping 64KB of RAM).
-> BA> He also wrote software to allow Fiddonet software to run on
-> BA> CP/M systems - mainly because 'they' said it couldn't be
-> BA> done .
Folks are always saying stupid things like that... But this one I
think takes the cake... The reason we have FOSSIL drivers and other
extra layers in today's BBS software is entirely because of the fact
that Fidonet was designed to work with all types of computers and not
just IBM Compatible systems. I thought I read that when Tom Jennings
first started working on fido BBS and fidonet that they had a few CP/M
based BBS developers networking with fidonet.
-> I have logged into a site running on a Model III TRS-80. Once.
I've logged into Commodore BBS's and perhaps a few coco BBS's, but
unless your seriously into the nostalgia and all.... The lag time of
waiting for the disk drives to read is slow as can be.... That and you
have to admit, its nice to be able to call one BBS and read several
message areas at a time.... With a floppy based message system, most
don't have but a handful of test messages written by people who will
often call 1 time and never call back.... Now if in the case mentioned
here you use a PC's hard drive to emulate a virtual drive for the
computer, it may be very well faster and could be done to where you have
storage space to make it worth while to spend time there.... The coco
might be cool for some folks who remember enough about the coco and are
familiar with os/9 to allow them to have a shell account sorta where
they can play around with remembering the old days....
