subject: A silly question....

RSLet me butt in here for a second- it was my understanding that the
RSletters R and Y [ and their converse S and G] were used for the test
RSmessage because between the two, all of the bits that are used to form
RSthe letters are used. This way, the system is tested for activty on all
RSof the bits. I'm sorry but I don't have my RTTY file in front of me and
RSthis is off the top of my head. I will try to locate that file and
RSperhaps send a more detailed answer in a few days. And there are no
RSstupid questions. That's how you learn. We all started from point zero
RSat one point-lest we forget. Regards and hope you are enjoying RTTY!

Ricky the gentleman who maintained the Western Union machines in my area
did some work on my first Model 28 many moons ago and we were discussing
this. The said RY and/or the QBF sequence will put the mechanics of a
machine through all possible motions. He had been working ont he things
since before WW II so I have accepted his info as probably pretty accurate.
