You're way too young! Chevy built that V8 for only one or two years. Had
over-head valves too...Many other vehicles had a V8 before Ford introduced
the Flathead in 32...The Ford was the first that was affordable by any blue
collar worker of the day.
Try this; Packard and Cadillac built V16's in the mid 30's....Lincoln's came
with a flathead V12's up until the end of the 48 model year, a flathead V8
till 1954's first OHV V8...
Meanwhile, Chevy was selling more cars than Ford and they only had that old
reliable Blue Flame Six under the hood, or Stovebolt as it was called by
some...

Funny, I remember them screaming while they were still 265's...Ask any Ford
owner of that era. Or (chuckle) Mopar owner..BTW, the first 265's used
hydraulic lifters. Later, there were some mild solid lifter cams.
Dual Rochester 4bbl carbs on a 265 in 56 that made some pretty good
horsepower...In 57 the 283 FI engine was the first production engine that
made 1 horsepower per cubic inch...and it went on to produce 315HP in 1961,
it's last year of production in the Corvette..about this time the 30/30
Duntov solid lifter cams came onto the streets...along with the 327, which is
another story...
... , Ehhh, what's up, Doc?
