Antennas are strange beasts. Small antennas generally perform in a
small way. If you are trying to save space, that might be a good
compromise, but it's really a compromise.

I have tried small, medium, and large antennas. A well designed
antenna will work well in proportion, more or less, to its size. It's
a fact of nature.

Not that you can't have lots of fun with a small antenna. Just don't
expect too much. My triband beam at 40 feet does a remarkable job, with
lots of countries worked with excellent reports. I break pileups most
of the time. You just can't do that well with small antennas.

As for VHF, there is a different story if you are using repeaters.
Repeaters have great coverage much of the time, and the antenna you use
is far less critical. But we're not talking about DX here..
