SL-> I just bought another Zoom modem and I'm having trouble setting it up.
-> Every time I log on to a BBS I get garbage most of the time. Sometimes
-> it goes ok for a while then I get some garbage on the screen. When I
-> download using ZMODEM, I either get a "long packet...." message or an
-> "incorrect CRC error".
Even if this is a external, and you only have 8250/16450 uarts, you
should get about 1630+ CPS transfer rate. In QmPro config, make sure
the device port speed is set to 19200 or 38400. (You can set higher
port speeds, but is has been my experience that it causes the problems
you experienced.)
SL-> I'm using a ZOOM 14,400 fax modem. v.32bis Model110. Another thing,
-> could I set the modem speed at 19,200 or higher?
Most people get the Port speed and the Connect speed confused in dealing
with modems. Port speed is the rate in which the computer communicates
with the modem. (Whether it be with a internal or though a serial card
and external) These rates start out the same as the connect speed, but
as the speed increases, the numbers start to differ after 9600.
Since a 14.4 modem's max speed is 14.4K you need a port speed at least
the same if not greater. The closest is 19200. Usually the faster the
modem, the higher port speed is recommended. This is to prevent the
computer from being 'backed up' in trying to move information from the
modem to your system. (But setting the port speed too high can cause
the computer to 'lose' characters and the result is garbage.)
So set your port speed to 19200 or 38400 and see what happens. (this is
in the Device section of Qsetup.
I hope I've enlighten you. I tried not to bore you too much. :)
