Auke, go back to 5.1! Run, do not walk. I have really tried to use
6.0aD and just can't continue to insult myself any longer. I've
been doing a lot of genealogy manuscripts lately that heavily use
ToC and Index marking. I've done that from not only a commercial
product but from my own efforts at Mark Text. WP 6.0 DOS is
worthless!!! My documents are typically 50-60 pages in length with
peoples names marked for ToC/Index. Can you imagine how many Names
can be found in a Genealogy manuscript?
With 5.1 I can do a 5 page ToC and a 15 page Index in about 5
minutes. With 6.0aD it took 30 minutes!!! The author of the
commercial product designs his output for the WP DOS platform. He
warns his users: "DO NOT USE WP 6.0 DOS FOR LARGE REPORTS!!!".
Being nieve I tried 6.0aD on a 100 page report that 5.1 took 10
minutes to do. 6.0aD took an hour, and produced NOTHING!!!
Currently I'm marking a document that contains about 5,000 names,
and is 90 pages, 2-column, long. The Index will be about 30 pages,
3-column. I'm half finished (using a programmable keyboard); 5.1
is taking about 15 mintues to generate the Index. I wouldn't even
consider using 6.0aD on that job!
To prepare for the job I took the 90 page listing into 6.0aD to use
the Change Case-Initial Caps command to change caps "NAMES" into
"Names." The fantastic 6.0aD conversion to 5.1 code screwed up the
Columns formatting so badly I scrapped the project after about 4
hours work. I used the Rationalization command and kept the "NAMES"
style. ;=)
As you said, it ain't so much the hardware as it is the software.
We used to pride our selves in writing code that was smaller and
faster. That's no longer true today; today we have Megs of memory
instead of just 4/8/16K. Any Stupido and write slow code,
especially with todays Object Oriented coding practice; it takes a
good programmer to write tight code.
