The concern for me is sending raw cash (many times, credit cards aren't an
option, and bank transfers or checks raise costs for either me or the author,
not cool), given that I've had postal services overseas pocket the cash that
I've intended for the product's author. While I'll still do this -- taking
some serious precautions, of course, I've found that purchasing something for
the author works wonders. Ask the author if you can register or buy
something for him or her, and once the product is in their hands, you get
your key. Last time I did this was with PalmScan, last summer. I got what I
wanted, and the author got a CD that he wanted. :)
