| subject: | Re: new hard drive, new problems |
From: "Adam Flinton"
I was thinking about this a while back (re how USB can change your POV)
A) You can get USB hard disks, CD, DVD, CDRW etc (even solid state disks
which fit on your keyring). i.e storage options are there. B) You can get
USB peripherals (Scanners, mice, keyboards etc). You can even get USB
network devices (inc ADSL).
The Problem is the video feed / cable.
BTW does anyone know what a std Vid card > monitor data rate is?
I say the problem because the USB cables can be fairly long between
hubs...thus you can have the CD/RW\DVD drives, Hard disks, keyboard, mouse
etc around you & yet have your PC in the cupboard under the stairs.
You could keep your hard drives in a safe (with a hole drilled in it) while
the PC was in the next room.
The problem is that USB is more adaptable than video cabling i.e. imagine
you cabled up the house with USB cabling, putting hubs into every room etc.
You could then roam with your USB mouse & keyboard, have your hard
disks somewhere safe etc. Possibly your USB DVD/CD/RW could have batteries
& be designed to be portable (i..e. you write a disk of your favourite
songs, pop the USB cable et voila disk based mp3/divx player).
The problem is how to get the same "plug & play" to the
displays as well i.e. unless you use the TV (via a TV-OUT on the vid card)
you can't just plug a display into a common "bus" & voila we
have a picture.
