Denarius? That doesn't seem anything close to penny. Where is the
connection between them? BTW in Roman days salt was a very valuable
commodity and was regularly used for the payroll of workers and
soldiers hence the term salary. You must have heard expressions like
"Not worth his salt"... etc? These are derived from that practice of
payment in salt.
