Fido et is an email and public addressing network that developed
independantly of Usenet but it serves the same function for BBS's as
usenet does for the internet. It started with two guys in their basement
in 1981 and has spread to the entire world. It is easier to use than the
internet as the software is cheaper, the network is free to use (in most
cases), it has an administration that watches over it and it utilizes
compression technlogy as well you don't need E-mail addresses, just names
to send E-mail - it finds the people. A great system but it has taken some
stiff competition from the commerically marketed Internet in the past few
years.
