Hi Brian
BJ> Alan, how well does your fifty foot dipole work with the 803A? I'm
BJ> considering the construction of a dipole antenna from Grove
BJ> Enterprises to hook up with my 818CS radio. Some others who have the
BJ> Sangeans and RS DX series radios say long wire antennas have a
BJ> tendency to blow the front end of the radio when there is a zap of
BJ> static electricity. I'm having second thoughts about erecting that
Although I have an R-5000, I also have a DX-440 (803a). I've run it on
all my outdoor antennas over the years without a hitch. BUT, I have a
lightning/static arrestor on all the antenna lines. It's one of the gas
discharge types and anyone without one is looking for trouble.
Do you have a antenna tuner now Brian? I've always felt they are more
important than the antenna! As far as I can see, Grove doesn't make the
Mini-3 anymore. It didn't have a pre-amp, it was a tuner, not a
pre-selector. The pre-amp is ok but most people over use it, rather than
just tweeking a few db of gain they crank the thing up and bring on all
kinds of images and garbage.
You mentioned 50' dipole above, is that as big as you can fit in your
yard? I've been using a G5RV jr antenna for a couple of years and I
REALLY like it. It's 52' long and has about 25-30 feet of what I believe
is 400 ohm twin lead. It's the WIDE twin lead, about 1". It also has a
balun at the end of the twin lead with a coax fitting. It is broadband
and best of all it is a very "quiet" antenna. It had alot less noise
than my Grove Windom had.
