   The last thing I want to do is shill for Marvel.  One huge reason 
   the issue regarding Northstar sold so well was due to the media 
   attention it got.  Many TV news folks were enamoured with the idea
   of a mainstream publisher's character saying he is gay.  
   So in this case, some shops found many people who didn't normally
   buy comics getting that issue of Alpha Flight out of curiousity.  
   I read the issue, and personally didn't feel it was done well enough
   to keep a fraction of those potential new readers hooked on the
   series.  Marvel had much better talent at their disposal to create
   something that could have helped the circulation of that comic grow.
   I serious don't believe the issue was done well enough to make any
   lasting impact or to make it a landmark issue.
   The management may have ultimately decided they were uncomfortable
   with having a gay supporting character in one of their comics.  However,
   I think the book wasn't selling well in the first place.  And I remember
   some comments that it was a gimmick done with a the struggling Alpha
   Flight comic in a last ditch effort to get attention.
