... it's different when it slides.

Holden's power steering uses the Australian-invented Bishop system
like the Skyline. You get maximum assistance with maximum movement
(parking), and bugger all power assistance for small movements (at
speed). It works beautifully, and as you say, you get road feel just
like the real thing. Peter Brock races with power steering...

If it slides (the Skyline is wonderfully neutral, with final
oversteer), and if you let the tail hang out before you correct, the
tendency is to move the wheel a lot, and you end up with maximum power
assistance when you really don't want it (the car is already light,
and sliding). The tendency is to over-correct, and end up a bit
sideways the other way, and have to catch it again, especially if you
drop the throttle in fright. You have to watch it, and be gentle.

It's only a problem when you are hooning, and let the tail hang out.
In a scary slide, when you feel the front break on water or something,
you would be gentle anyway, and the power problem does not apply.

BTW, I've been doing a bit of hooning with my wider rear tyres in
the wet. The grip of the low profile 215's over the 185's is better,
and I wondered how they would finally let go. In fact, they let go
more gently than the narrower tread. The old tryes let go all at once,
with a tendency to hop a foot or so - these just slide, and are easier
to correct. You low-profile monsters could be even better, with less
tendency to flex the sidewalls and hop.

Bob
