George and I were discusssing confusing phrases in email. I thought up
another which must drive people who are only just learning English,
crazy.

It's "Do you mind".. As in "do you mind if I open this window?"


Now the correct resonse if you don't mind is : YES I don't mind. But
most people will say, "no, I don't mind"...lol.. Which is a double
negative... and well we tangle mangle happily around the may pole..


George had the example of "Didn't you go to the theature'?

Now to look at that you might think "didn't' would mean a negative.
But the person being asked, said Yes... and so the first person asks"
how was the show?

I'm gonna let George take over because he's better at these brain
tanglers. :)
