Terry May gave up a long homer to Otis Nixon and said:
TM> I'll go one step further and say the 2ND best pitcher on the Braves is
TM> Tom Glavine (though Smoltz IS an excellent pitcher, seemingly getting
TM> better and better all the time).
In the preseason one of those guys from Baseball Weekly talked about how
Smoltz had a good year because he was finally getting the runs that went to
Maddux (absurd!). As it stands, Maddux is STILL last among the starters in
run support and should EASILY finish last among the starters again. Maddux
has finished last every year since he's been with Atlanta and I think that's
the most amazing stat of all. I remember when I talked about Nolan Ryan and
his lack of run support and David Lentz couldn't believe that Ryan could have
went all those years with such lousy support but if you look back even
further, Maddux had poor run support in Chicago and he only had one season
that could even be considered decent, 4.87 in 89.
