fidonet is great for a bit of recreation, having a yarn with your mates
etc but thats all. theres no way to do serious work on it, you send
mail, and, unless it is local, it will usually get there sometime but
theres not much way of knowing when or even if. i am glad that it is
here, but i know that i can actually achieve more in an hour on
compuserve or even the internet than in days on fidonet. the difference
is that the other nets were set up to do real work, the internet by it's
users, and compuserve by those wishing to profit by providing a top
class service. in both cases, the intent was to provide a service, not
to provide a hobby for those running it. i am deeply suspicious of M$'s
info highway, i think that it will be more glitz than substance, it will
be an attempt to pull in the punters, and extract the maximum dollar by
going for the lowest common denominator - in fact the big mac of the
computer world. its just a worry that it may swallow up some of the more
worthwhile services available now.
