fidonet is great for a bit of recreation, having a yarn with your mates

etc but thats all. theres no way to do serious work on it, you send

mail, and, unless it is local, it will usually get there sometime but

theres not much way of knowing when or even if. i am glad that it is

here, but i know that i can actually achieve more in an hour on

compuserve or even the internet than in days on fidonet. the difference

is that the other nets were set up to do real work, the internet by it's

users, and compuserve by those wishing to profit by providing a top

class service. in both cases, the intent was to provide a service, not

to provide a hobby for those running it. i am deeply suspicious of M$'s

info highway, i think that it will be more glitz than substance, it will

be an attempt to pull in the punters, and extract the maximum dollar by

going for the lowest common denominator - in fact the big mac of the

computer world. its just a worry that it may swallow up some of the more

worthwhile services available now.
