How about leaving it as "Maddux is the best pitcher in the National League."  
Since he's never pitched in the AL, we can't know if he'd be as dominant in 
that league as he is in the more pitcher-friendly NL.  I suspect he would be, 
but his ERA would be about a run higher.  *adh*
