Well, with crochet you are working with one stitch at a time.  If you
drop that stitch you know it immediately!  As for being quicker, well
it depends on what stitch you are using, the size yarn, and how fast 
you stitch.  I made two sweaters three years ago, took me about 2 hours
on each.  Made an afghan in high school.  Took me one month, but I only
worked on it in study hall (one hour per day).
