At Mail Call, Graham Drummond was heard saying to Derek Wakefield
GD> From "Take Off" magazine (I'm yet to find an error in one) issue
GD> #27, page 756:
GD> Variants of the Hustler bomber that were never built included
GD> the proposal for a "stretched" B-58B for SAC, a B-58C variant
GD> which would have had Pratt & Whitney J58 engines, the B-58D
GD> long-range, all-weather interceptor for the Air Defence
GD> Command (ADC) also powered by J58s, and a B-58E twin-engine
GD> version for Tactical Air Command (TAC).
GD> Presumably since the proposed C and D variants both used J58s it
GD> would be reasonable to assume the B could have as well. I've not
GD> been able to find any other information on the subject.
The letter in AF Magazine mentioned "Turbofans" for the B model,
but an earlier post (pulled from the Aviation Encyclopedia) states it
was to use a later variant of the J79.
J58...that sounds familar, but I can't peg any other aircraft (of
the supersonic variety) that used it.
That D model sounds intriguing. I'd like to hear more about how
they envisioned modifying a 58 to serve as an interceptor.
Thanks!
