do you know the name of this S.M.A.R.T. reporting tool? i still run OS/2
and was only alerted to a S.M.A.R.T. error when i (re)booted the box some
months ago... i went ahead and replaced the drive but would not have known
about the problem if i hadn't had to (re)boot the box and been there when
it was coming up... IIRC, it was after a commercial power outage and the
UPS had shut the machine down... normally, this all happens automatically
when i'm not around... however, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and sending me an
email or something is highly desirable... come to think of it, i'm not
aware of any utils or OS that does report S.M.A.R.T. errors during normal
system operation...
