I read the original, and it appears (which I didn't realize from your post)
that the hosts had makings for a meal that they generously thought the
widow would be delighted to prepare for the date (while the hosts made
themselves scarce.)  It was the hosts who asked the man to leave after the
widow departed.  I'll bet it will be a long time before either the man or
the widow accept a dinner date without very closely questioning the
would-be hosts, and assessing their trust in said would-be hosts.
