Cops hold 10-mile run to aid shooting victim
By Heather Urquides
The Arizona Daily Star
A waitress shot in a robbery last month is recovering
from her injuries but it will be months before she will walk,
her father said yesterday.
John Raab said his daughter Shelley, a 22-year-old
mother of a special needs toddler, is undergoing rehabilitation
at St. Mary's Hospital.
Doctors say she must learn to walk again. They estimate
she will be able to walk with a cane in two to three
months, Raab said.
Shelley was shot twice in the chest during an April 12
robbery at Famous Sam's Bar and Restaurant at West Grant
and North Silverbell roads.
``We were appalled at this case,'' said Sgt. Bob Webster,
who supervises the robbery unit. ``Of the thousands of
cases I've worked, this is the first one I've even been
to that someone was shot for absolutely no reason.''
Yesterday, Webster was one of more than 25 officers
who participated in a 10-mile benefit run for Shelley.
``I just want to say thank you,'' Raab told the group
yesterday. ``What these guys are doing is just super.''
A robber shot Shelley during the 1:30 a.m. heist after he
told her to get into the walk-in cooler with other employees,
police said.
``Apparently she didn't move quite fast enough because
the robber shot her and then dragged her into the cooler,''
Webster said.
Two men are charged in that robbery and two others -
one that left a man dead.
Marcus L. Finch, 20, and Keith R. Phillips, 27, were indicted
Friday on 56 charges ranging from first-degree murder to armed
robbery.
Shelley hasn't been able to talk with her family about
the night of the robbery, Raab said.
``It's something she has to deal with,'' he said.
Shelley also had a hard time emotionally when she was shown
the photo lineup, he said.
Her 3-year-old son misses his mother, Raab said, adding that
he hasn't been to the hospital to see her much.
The smell of the hospital upsets the blind youngster, who spent
a lot of time in hospitals when he was younger, Raab said.
Yesterday's run, which netted about $1,300 in cash and
gift certificate donations, will help pay for Shelley's and her
son's medical expenses, said Tucson police Sgt. Wes Dison.
Yesterday's run from the Famous Sam's to Old Tucson Studios
included members of the Tucson Police Department, the FBI, the
U.S. Marshal's Service and the community.
``Ninety-nine percent of the time all we deal with is the
negative and we see victim after victim,'' said Officer Charles
Blue. He was one of the first officers to arrive at the bar that
night.
``It's nice to see the officers and the community get together
on their own to help turn a tragic event into a positive one,'' he
said.
Donations for Shelley's fund are being accepted at Bank
One, 2121 W. Grant Road.
