Mike Mussina retired the first 25 Cleveland batters he faced, and was two
outs away from the first perfect game in Orioles' history. Unfortunately, he
threw a 1-1 fastball to Sandy Alomar, who ripped it to left (the only
hard-hit ball of the game off Moose) for a single to end the perfecto and the
no-no. Mussina didn't lose his concentration - he whiffed the next two
batters to end the one-hitter.
It was fortunate that Mussina was at his best, because Charles Nagy was
continually betrayed by his defense and let off the hook by the Oriole
offense. The Indians committed two errors, and the Orioles stranded 12
runners, but managed three runs for a 3-0 victory.
