subject: NHRA: Brainerd: Cory McClenathan Saturday summary

Cory McClenathan draws Tony Schumacher for raceday Sunday

BRAINERD, Minn. (August 16, 2003) - As the Lucas Oil Nationals descended
on Brainerd International Raceway (BIR), the weather was hot and humid,
with the track hot and slippery -- not a good combination for low numbers
and fast speeds.

Due to the conditions, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Darrell
Gwynn-owned, NY Yankees/ Berryman Products dragster, was unable to
improve on his initial run on Friday and finished 13th on the qualifying
ladder. On that run, McClenathan stopped the BIR scoreboards in 4.885
seconds. He repeated that elapsed time (E.T.) in Friday's second
session. Saturday's two passes netted a run of 4.903 seconds followed by
a run of 5.428 seconds.

By qualifying No. 13, McClenathan, from Riverside, Calif. driver will be
matched against the Army car of Tony Schumacher in tomorrow's opening
round of eliminations. Schumacher qualified No. 4 with an elapsed time
of 4.703 seconds. The pair have met once in 2003 with Cory Mac coming
away with the victory. In 17 career match ups McClenathan has 10 wins.

"After the western swing, we were thinking about taking a different
approach with this NY Yankees/Berryman Products car. Then we get here
and the track was not exactly what we were hoping it would be. Most
everybody, including us, has underestimated the track. We're just trying
to make this car consistent. Its run consistent numbers all right, only
not quick enough. We're just going to have to suck it up and find out
what's wrong, then get back on track here," said McClenathan, as the team
prepared for Schumacher."

For television highlights of qualifying, tune to ESPN2 from 10-11 p.m.
tonight. Final eliminations for the Lucas Oil Nationals get underway at
11 a.m. (Local time-CDT) on Sunday. With same day, tape-delayed
coverage, Sunday's eliminations can be viewed on ESPN (early elimination
rounds) from 6-7 p.m. and on ESPN2 (final elimination rounds) from 10
p.m. - 12:30 a.m. Television times are Eastern Daylight Time and subject
to change.

Gann rides Pro Stock Suzuki to second spot

BRAINERD, Minn. (August 16, 2003) - With the temperatures hovering in the
90s over the two days of qualifying, Shawn Gann placed his Mac Tools/
Berryman Products Suzuki in the No. 2 position for tomorrow's
eliminations at the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International
Raceway.

Improving with each pass except his final, the Stoneville, N.C. driver
had a best pass of 7.250 seconds in Saturdays first run. He will go
heads up in tomorrow's opening round with Karen Stoffer, who qualified in
the 15th spot with a pass of 7.335 seconds at 177.58 mph. Gann, #3 in Pro
Stock Bike (PBS) points, will be vying for his third career win.

Pro Stock Bike Notes:

Scali (#1 in PSB points): Geno Scali's only career victory entering the
2003 season was his win at Brainerd last year. The Chicago native has
three victories this season and is the leading contender for the 2003
POWERade title.

Savoie (#2 in PSB points): Defending Pro Stock Bike champion Angelle
Savoie entered the 2002 season with six first round losses in her eight
years of NHRA competition. She has five this season, including the last
three in a row, nearly doubling her career total. Three-time champion
Savoie won't surrender her crown easily though and the Vance & Hines
two-bike team is on the verge of putting a Harley-Davidson in the
winner's circle for the first time in NHRA history.
