I think you or I (well it's possible:)he) have completely misunderstood the
concept of modems. Internet and Internet-connections has nothing to do with
what modems is in the other end. His BBS doesn't have to have a T1 connection
to the Internet, why on earth should he? People can just download from the
BBS or read mail, whatever pleases them.
But the real truth about the new 57k6 modems is that a V34-modem should be
able to run just as fast with the right software.
Basically the 57k6 is a half-duplex model, which means only one direction at
full speed, and the other at a minimum speed. I think it was 1200 for the
57k6, but I can't remember and doesn't have the tech-spec right here.
(someone please fill in)
Half-duplex means, as you might have guessed, that it is only worth something
if you either upload OR download.
Using this half-duplex modem on a PPP Internet-connection means that you
network connection is only 1200 one way, and 57k6 the other.
When downloading from a BBS, you can get 57k6 full thrust download, yeah, but
you are forgetting that if you use a protocol like SModem, you can
up/download at the same time, thats 28k8 x 2, which is, as you might've
guessed, 57k6 ..
So basically a 28k8 modem can perform as good as a 57k6 modem, except the
ast
1200 bps. (wow, what a speed, he)
Now, this has nothing to do with the Internet, but imagine using a PPP line
to your provider, ftp'ing your newest program to a site in Canada, while
downloading the newest drivers for your soundcard from USA.
Tell me, what modem will give you the highest throughput?
I'll tell you, the one with best compression ;-)
(and I'd say that the two modems are equally good at it, as it's bound to be
a V42bis compression they use)..

Rene Christensen
