  Here are a couple questions/suggestions.  First, if you use the DIAL
  DIRECTORY to call this friend, check and make sure you are not
  specifying a speed for that entry in the DIAL DIRECTORY.  Next, under
  OPTIONS, DIAL SETUP..make sure you have AUTO-BAUD DETECT turned OFF.
  Set your comm port at 38400 or 57600.  Then make sure your DIAL
  DIRECTORY entries don't specify a speed setting.  If they do, change
  them to DEFAULT.
