-> The term mainframe used to mean something.
Exactly. _Used_ to.
-> I run a BBS that is capable of having 256 simultaneous users
-> accessing several 100 gigabytes of files. Is it a mainframe? No,
-> it's a 486.
->
-> If you switch from dos to unix the bbs can handle well over a 1,000
-> simultaneous users and do a more efficient job with file storage.
I am always impressed to hear about the fantastic job you do for your
district with technology. Your district is very forward thinking to
provide you with the resources to do this, and they are lucky to have
someone like you with the vision to help them implement it.
As I have mentioned (maybe) a few times here, I am trying to get an
Internet account set up for the math department at my school. We have a
single computer on a cart. I had suggested the possibility of getting on
the Internet and browsing the Web, etc... to the math teachers at one of
our department meetings, and it really seemed to catch their interest. I
thought, this is the way to go. I can get these teachers energized and
interested in technology this way. So, I wanted to purchase a modem, a
little software and sign up for an internet account at about $20/month
for unlimited usage. When I ran this idea past the admin, can you
believe they TURNED ME DOWN! Their objections were based on ignorance
and misunderstanding. :-(
Eventually, I convinced them to let me try it. It took two weeks for
them to grant approval, and they place restrictions on me that are
cumbersome. But, I do have a green light. OK, maybe a yellow one.
-> On my BBS hundreds of students can check out Huck Finn on the same
-> day, and, they don't have to check the book back in.
Good point.
Keep up the good work.
Sheila
