Since Dave Navarro already gave this gentleman an answer,
perhaps it won't seem too knavish of me to make this observation:
I cannot, and will never understand, why some programmers
expect other programmers to debug their code for them. It
is not the job of the technical staff at the company that
made the compiler to debug your faulty code. It is no one's
job but yours.
Debugging is an ugly, frustrating, time-consuming job. No
one likes to spend a couple of working days banging their
head against an intransigent bug. But, if you wrote the code,
why would you expect anyone else to find the bug you
can't find?
ANY time someone else answers a request to debug unfamiliar code,
our appreciation meter should burst. It's like a stranger
spending the whole morning helping you find a lost dog, or
pulling your car out of the ditch.
That's one reason why my opinion of Dave Navarro is so high.
He offers this kind of help to people cheerfully and
consistently. And he rarely gets much thanks for it. In my
book, he's a real Mensch.
