Hello Paul!

In a message written on Sunday May 07 1995, Paul Rider insanely
babbles to Paul Sidorsky:

PR> Damn fine!! There were times I would of paid twice the price of the 3.1
PR> compiler just for that one litte thing...I'm a big fan of IBM asm
PR> programming (the only one that's challenging ).

Oh, cool. I've never gotten into asm yet, though I fully intend to
someday. I can do a bit of stuff using inline asm (mostly interrupt calls)
but can't make a full program in asm yet. How big of an advantage
(speed/size/etc.) is it in an OS/2-native program?

PS>> are expensive, but so's everything nowadays. Besides, I

PR> Just for future savings... How exactly does one go about doing that?
 PR> Can anyone?

Well, a modem-friend of mine registered his copy of BC++ 3.0 and I guess
they sent him this offer, but he already bought BC++/2 1.5 so he sent the
form for the offer to me. I registered my BC++ 3.0 as well, but I did it
with Borland USA and not Borland Canada so that's probably why I never got
anything myself. I'm sure if you called Borland Canada next time you want
to buy from them you could find out more. Tell them you've registered and
see if they'll give you a deal. (yeah, right)

PS>> Anyhow, In the short time I've been using it, I haven't found any
PS>> cause to complain. Sure there a couple of minor bugs in the IDE, but
PS>> DOS version has bugs too. Everything in that

PR> Have you noticed any bugs that threw you for a loop ? I don't wanna spend
PR> the time messing with something if I can find out in advance it's a bug...

Well, the random() macro is (still) screwed, but there are ways to get
around it so it's not too critical. The rest of the bugs that I've found
are in the IDE. Most are cosmetic inconvenicences, but I did find one
glaring bug, and that was that OBJ files mysteriously disappeared if the
IDE had to spawn TASM to compile inline assembler (thus causing the Link to
fail). I suspect there's probably a way around this, though, I just
haven't bothered to figure it out yet as it's not critical for me at this
time.

Oh, and be sure to keep BC++/DOS and BC++/2 isolated, i.e. make sure only
one's in the path at one time. I had terrible headaches when BC++/2 tried
to call some of my BC++/DOS programs, then I got smart and deleted
BC++/DOS's dir from my OS/2 path and BC++/2's dir from my DOS path and all
was well. :-)

PS>> package has worked solidly for me and I do not mind
PS>> allocating the needed 70MB of HD space for the entire
PR> ...damn, I was kinda hoping the installation program would allocate
PR> the space for me ...

Yeah, we need those self-replicating circuits like on Star Trek TNG. :-)

70MB is _everything_, though. You can delete a lot of the stuff, including
the runtime library source if you don't need it. Probably could cut it
down to as low as 40MB if you needed to.

There may or may not be a selective install feature, I don't remember. I
just installed everything once and tossed the CD back into the box, which
was somewhat anticlimactic since I also spent the $200 I saved on the
BC++/2 cost to get a CD-ROM drive _just_ for the purpose of installing
BC++/2. I mean, I wanted a CD-ROM drive, but not right away! Then when I
found out the damn thing only came on CD (and at 70MB I can't really blame
them) I decided I'd better get the drive since I badly need BC++/2.
Fortunately, a CD-ROM drive has other uses. :-)

PR> mouth watering... Well, after the borland knocks I've read, it's
PR> refreshing to see someone's happy with it, as I've allready ordered it...

Refreshing to see somebody excited about it. :-)

PR> supposed to be in tuesday now...

Shouldn't be long I should think. I ordered mine in the mail, _paying_
_by_cheque_, and it only took 2 weeks to get here. They even sent it out
before they cashed the cheque! Most companies wait three weeks for the
damn cheque to clear first, never mind send it out before it's even
through.

PR> How is it in calgary now ? It's still kinda chilly here in the
 PR> nations's capitol.

Oh, uhhh, was pretty rainy here over the weekend but today it looks like
it's sunny. I prefer cloudy weather myself, since I have somewhat
sensitive eyes and just don't like being hot. :-)
