LJ> They'd have to pass both the George Filter and the Annoyance Test in
order
LJ> to get in. Unfortunately, game scoring isn't much like movie scoring.
LJ> It's non-linear, first - you can't count absolutely on someone being
LJ> somewhere doing something at any exact time. The best you can get is
some
LJ> level of interactivity through context-sensitive loops/jumps. Second,
LJ> music that stands out usually detracts from the game itself. If the
ame
LJ> is what we want people to see first and foremost, then the music has to
be
LJ> in the background. Most of the tracks you've mentioned are too "in your
LJ> face," and would require serious surgery to be backed
LJ> down to an acceptable
LJ> frenzy level without losing their identity. I'm not saying it's
LJ> impossible: I'm just saying that it is usually not worth the time
nd/or
LJ> effort. Exceptions happen, though: we haven't even started DNF's music
LJ> yet.
They may be "in your face," but don't forget that they'd also be another
big reason to buy Duke Nukem Forever! Remember, one of the reasons people
bought Wipeout XL (for the Playstation, that is) is because of the killer
soundtrack, which includes the Chemical Brothers and Prodigy, among others.
By the way - if you DO use "Block Rockin' Beats," a good place to use it
would be in a dance club level, with the lights pulsing like crazy.
Also... a lot of the tunes I suggested are "sans vocals," and could be
fairly low key so long as you don't record it at a high volume.
JF> - Prodigy (heard "Firestarter?")
LJ> I liked their "Voodoo People" better.
That's nice, but it's not quite at the
"can't-dance-to-it-for-anymore-than-two-minutes-without-burning-out" level of
my favourite. Also, have you heard "Breathed" (I think that's the name)?
JF> - White Zombie (for those scenes on the Harley)
JF> - Chemical Brothers (high-tech maps)
JF> - Orbital (just told you why)
JF> - Daft Punk (just told you why, part 2)
JF> - Dick Dale (for that Pulp Fiction feel)
JF> - Tom Jones (the prerequisite "lounge lizard" music for Vegas)
LJ> We've talked a lot about what kind of music Duke himself would have
rown
LJ> up listening to. Many names have been passed around:
LJ> I personally believe
LJ> he would have been into Pantera and the like.
Maybe, but don't forget that you're getting the input of a late-teens Duke
Nukem 3D fan! :-)
JF> Hope this helps. Anyhow, speaking of Tom Jones, will you
JF> have "Kung-Fu Fighting" as one of the CD tracks for Shadow Warrior?
LJ> Don't know. There will be a rather unexpected surprise on the CD,
though.
It would be a good idea, at least for the credits or a secret level. I'm
sure people would start laughing when they heard it play for the first time!
What's the "surprise?" It wouldn't be fair to all the non-E3-attendees to be
left out.
PS - You wouldn't happen to have an overwhelming urge to get the 3D Realms
crew to pay for a flight to Garland, so that two (hopefully) future 3D Realms
employees could get a sample of what your place is like?
And I'm not kidding about that future employees bit... we've been heavy
into computer courses throughout high school. I've been doing a lot of Duke
3D level building, with some amazing lighting and atmosphere in my more
recent levels.
Please, in the name of humanity! <:-)
