Three killed, 114 injured as Philippine plane crashes
MANILA - March 22, 1998 9:36 p.m. EST - At least 114 people were
injured in addition to the three killed when a Philippine Airlines
jet overshot the runway and plowed into homes in the central Philip-
pines, officials said Monday.
All of those killed were on the ground in Bacolod on the island
of Negros, the town's mayor Evelio "Bing" Leonardia said Monday,
updating the number of injured.
It was not yet clear how many of the 121 passengers and six crew
were injured in the crash and how many of those hurt were on the
ground. Leonardia said Monday that the most seriously injured person
on the plane was the pilot.
The Airbus A320 tore through a squatter area, its wings slicing
through about 20 houses, after overshooting the runway on landing on
Sunday night on a domestic flight from Manila.
Witnesses said the plane came to a halt after smashing into a
nightclub. Its cockpit and landing gear were both crushed and the
plane was resting on its belly with ambulances and fire trucks
around it.
Officials identified one of the dead in the country's second
aviation accident in less than two months as the manager of the
Brilliant City nightclub.
One of the dead was pulled from under the plane with his head
crushed, a local paper said.
Hospital sources said at least three Japanese nationals were
admitted with minor injuries. Radio reports also said that one
American was among the passengers.
A power blackout within one kilometer of the airport followed
the crash and hampered initial rescue work, dailies reported. They
said light was restored after more than an hour.
The cause of the crash is not clear. The Bacolod mayor said the
weather was good at the time and airline officials said the Airbus
320 was new and in good condition.
Senior vice president for sales Avelino Zapanta told a local
radio station Monday that the plane was one of four new Airbus 320s
which PAL obtained last year to replace Boing 737s on domestic
routes. The airline has ordered 12 Airbuses in all.
PAL Flight 137 overshot the runway by about 200 meters while
landing at 7:41 p.m. local time, Leonardia said.
The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been
found and are on their way to Manila for analysis, an airline
official said.
Last month a Cebu Pacific Air jet slammed into a mountain in the
southern Philippines, killing all 104 people on board in the
country's worst air disaster.

Four kil-led in L.A. Fire Department helicopter crash
LOS ANGELES - March 23, 1998 4:12 p.m. EST -- A Fire Department
helicopter crashed Monday as it tried to carry an 11-year-old girl
injured in a car wreck to the hospital, killing her and three of her
rescuers.
The fuselage of the wrecked helicopter rested on its side behind
a residential neighborhood just south of sprawling Griffith Park.
However, the aircraft did not crash near any homes and no one on the
ground was injured.
Annette Jarez was helping a park gardener when she heard the
engine sputter. She said she heard a "big boom and then it crashed,"
about 100 yards from her.
"The helicopter kind of buzzed the trees, then inverted, then
crashed," said another witness, Orlando Beard. 'It was the scariest
thing I've ever seen."
The pilot and one other crew member were hospitalized in serious
condition. Names of the four who died -- the girl and three crew
members -- were not released.
The Fire Department said the Bell 205 helicopter was flying from
the scene of a traffic accident involving a car and a dump truck in
the San Fernando Valley. The car was reportedly carrying a woman and
as many as six children.
Weather was clear at the time of the crash, around 7:45 a.m.
