MK> HEy all I need another opinion...I am gonn aget a peak charger but
MK> what kind? I was leaning toward a Pro Tech AC/DC digital peak...I like
MK> it beacuse it is AC/DC and u can charge a pack on connectors and
MK> trickle charge at the same time...
MK> but I also was thinking of getting a Novak Digi pk plus. w/ cooling
MK> fan. But the only down fall to that is that if I get a DC i have to
MK> lug aroung a damn power supply...
MK> WELL? Whats it gonna be? I willlbe charging probably 6c
MK> 1400's(sanyo) 7c 1800's(panasonic)
Forget both of 'em. Buy a Tekin BC48 or it's AC/DC cousin, the BC67.
The Pro-Tech peak chargers tend to shut off early under extreme
conditions, such as crowded pits or very hot temperatures. I've seen
nothing but problems with the Novak chargers at the tracks I've been to.
One advantage I have noticed since I switched to DC only chargers w/ an
external power supply, is that when the pits get crowded, and the AC line
voltage begins to drop, even cheaper power supplies seem to maintain a
constant voltage better than the built in ones in AC/DC chargers.
I use a Pyramid 14 amp unit ($64.00 at Hobby Warehouse) with an external
muffin fan to power both a Tekin BC48 and a Turbo Thirty. Even when both
units are charging at 5 amps or so this baby manages to keep the DC at
around 13.5 volts. Thats with a constant 11.5+ amp load! (5 amps for each
charger + 1.2 amps for two 12v fans + the chargers additional overhead.)
The fans are used for the power supply and the BC48, the T30 has a built
in fan. The fan on the BC48 really is overkill, cause it dosen't generate
much heat anyways. Cool electronics are happy electronics!
