The exit exam in Texas and the one they are planning to install here
next year on the Arkansas side are really very simple exams according to
my son who took one this year. This years exam was only to get an
indication of how students will do when it is administered next year.
In Arkansas their are three or four exams which students must take
during their 12 years in school. If a student fails a portion of an
exam they are re mediated in that subject but can move on in others. If
they fail all subject areas they are evaluated and either retained or
moved on with some re mediation. While the exams are not perfect they do
give an indication of the health of the system overall.
The exit exam IMO was designed to try to give some value to a High
School diploma. In todays environment where a student can pass the GED
exams and get a diploma from the High School of their choice,( May be
applicable to Arkansas only ), some of us are wondering why send our
students to the last two years. Get their GED and pack them off to
college or a Junior college where advanced learning can begin. :)
