At Mail Call, Wayne Thompson was heard saying to Derek Wakefield
WT> Yeah... I know, I feel the same way about them. Some of my
WT> earliest memories are seeing B-36s "buzzing the Valley" between
WT> Castle AFB and Beale AFB in the San Joaquin Valley here in
WT> California. I live in Stockton Ca, and can remember seeing B-36
WT> bombers flying LOW over my house almost every day for quite a while.
WT> Sometimes they'd have a fighter or two tagging along with them...
I've never seen one up close and personal. From what I understand
though, the last B-36 built - "The City of Fort Worth" - is being
restored as a permanent static display at Ft Worth Alliance Airport.
For many years, it sat out (exposed to the elements) next to the
parking lot of the old Ft Worth Greater Southwest International
Airport (that was closed when D/FW International was opened in '74).
Just before GSIA was closed there was some attempt to get it
airworthy again, but (from what I've heard) it had been gone WAY too
far between regular maintenance cycles, and time ran out. Hence, they
had to cut it up and haul it via semi to an air mueseum near Carswell
AFB/JRB. As such, it could never be made airworthy again.
After subcumbing to the elements though at the museum (from what
I saw of it on the local news, it was starting to look pretty
pathetic), some folks who used to work at the Consolidated/GD plant in
Ft Worth got together with a restoration group to restore it for
display at the new Ft Worth airport.
I don't know the full story anymore. But I'd be interested in
hearing more about this.
WT> Well, it's not my story, I just forwarded from the Fido "Funny"
WT> Echo. Besides, too many facts can ruin an otherwise good story...
I know, but I figured it was still worth pointing out.
