I don't think I've personally been closer than a couple miles of a tornado,
but about 20 years ago I was on the shore of lake Erie and stood there
watching 4 simultaneous water spouts that couldn't have been more than a
mile from me. It was a really awesome sight as they don't look like
tornado's but are more like big long worms reaching for the clouds.
