it's called ADSL (asynchronous digital subscriber line), is about as
fast as a T-1 without the cost, and you need to live within 2 1/2 miles
(wire miles, NOT ine-of-sight miles) from the 'central office' for your
area. PAc Bell, in a very dense urban setting, claims 60% of it's
customers will be within that area of coverage.
In real-world terms, expect it to be more like 40% or less that will get
even close to full benefit from this service, and the ISP will be
charging premiums for access. A cable-modem is still probably the best
bet if it's available.
