CM> how do SKS rounds compare to a .308?....(be patient I'm learning!!!!
CM>hehe)...why does a semi-auto have less recoil than a bolt action?????....
CM>calibers for rifles are confusing!!!!!
Bullet energies are measured in ft-lbs. The SKS will generally yeild
1100-1400 ft/lbs at the muzzle depending on the ammo. This is
significantly less than the 30-30 which is at around 2000 ft-lbs.
However, the 7.62x39 (sks) has a much better ballistic coeffecient (BC)
than the 30-30, and at around 200 yards, it retains as much energy as a
30-30. (The 30-30 must use ineffecient flat point bullets because of the
tube-fed design)
This is about the minimum energy one should use if hunting medium sized
deer, such as whitetail. It's a bit underpowered for mule deer, as they
tend to be farther away as well.
The .308 has around 2500 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle, and is good for
hunting anything up to about black bear, if proper bullet selection and
good hunting technique is used. It uses highly aerodynamic bullets like
the SKS
Many folks tend to overdo the amount of energy they need, my buddy has a
.257 roberts he's taken mule deer with at up to 300 yards with for many
years. it's got a muzzle energy about like that of the 30-30, but a much
better BC.
The difference in recoil is because a semi-auto ahs a recoiling mas in
the bolt that absorbs the initial kick, and distributes it to the gun
over a longer period of time: A bolt action rifle will kick back the
entire force of the bullet in the time the bullet takes to clear the
barrel, very fast. The semiauto will kick for the entire time the bolt
is in motion backwards, a much longer duration of time, say 1/100th of a
second as opposed to 1/1000th.
CM>and I could turn a profit ): but I don't think I could buy it for $150 and
ma
CM>any money off of it....waddya tink?...
Can't say, i'd be careful though, there must be a reason it's only
$150...
