Nathan Bollinger was caught asking.....
Gotta question I hope somebody can answer. Does any cable TV
channel fall within the 108-137 aircraft band? The reason I am
asking is because I know of a cable leak in my neighborhood. We
can pick up many of the cable channels clearly with an antenna.
However, when I tune to cable channel 14 while using an antenna,
I can also pick up aeronautical communications. I have been
trying for over 2 months to get the cable company to fix the
problem (as I am a cable subscriber and our cable reception is
VERY poor), and if I can prove that there is a possibility that
they are interefering with aircraft communications, it might give
them more incentive to fix the leak.
To which Todd Butler responded:
Yes.....at least four (or possibly five) channels on most cable
systems in North America utilize the aeronautical band. If your
neighborhood is like most, you will find many leakage points in
your cable system. If your cable company is like most, the system
operator will deny the existance of any leakage. If you inquire
as to the "biggest problem" at your cable company you will be told
"cable service theft" is the major trouble. However, an examination
of court records across America will show minimal cases concerning
this FEDERAL OFFENSE.
Your best bet is to document the leak (in writing), notify the cable
company (via a letter to their FCC Public File -- just like all of
the various broadcasters are required to hold) duplicate copies to
your Congressional representative, the Federal Communications
Commission, the Federal Aviation Administration, and your particular
state Public Utilities Commission.
Details surrounding exact standards can be found in the FCC Rules and
Regulations (Code of Federal Regulations Part 47 -- Section 76 under
Part 76.610, Part 76.613, Part 76.616, and Part 76.617. When you
contact your cable provider, make sure you have a copy of these very
specific sections to quote them. If you don't get an immediate
response, follow up. This is a hazard to aeronautical navigation and
communications. All of the above listed parties take this very
seriously, so should your cable company.
Locally, cable leakage falls directly on the input side of the major
Twin Cities area repeater at 146.25 Mhz. (We were here first!) It
is channel 18 on every system in the seven county metro area.
Good Luck, (I've heard the FCC is real busy these days!)
